(A sort of preliminary entry as I need to get some names from my notes to give credit to those who helped us out here.) Gusti woke me the next morning at about 8:30 to tell me that we fly in an hour. Getting up in a plane over the Westfjords is something I had been really wanting to do, if not for the experience of doing so then to get some photos that give some sense of the lay of the land. We drove out to the airport, met our pilot, and clambered into a small six-seater plane. To my knowledge, the plane we traveled in had no suspension system to soften landing other than big balloon tires which enable the plane to land an a variety of surfaces, which we experienced....

I returned to Iceland on the 8th of July for a short trip, mostly to visit the Hornstrandir Nature Preserve on the north coast of the Westfjords. It was a trip that I was thinking of being kind of tangential to the Focus Westfjords project as a whole, with its emphasis on the people of the Westfjords and how they live. But as the days of the visit progressed it occurred to me that the trip was more central and less tangential than I had anticipated. I´ll talk about this in subsequent blog posts this week.

Eftir rúmlega mánaðar pásu er verkefnið að fara í gang aftur. Matt mætir til landsins á morgun og verður í viku í þetta skiptið og hefst þá smá törn hjá okkur. Stefnt er á flug um Vestfirðina til að mynda úr lofti marga af æðislegustu stöðum Vestfjarða og höfum við útvegað okkur 3 og 1/2 tíma í lofti á vegum Markaðsstofu Vestfjarða, en þeim vantar loftmyndir og fengum við flugið í staðinn, frábær lausn sem hentar öllum! Takk fyrir það Markaðsstofa og Jón Páll. Markaðsstofan hefur verið að sýna þessu verkefni okkar nokkurn áhuga og er ómetanleg hjálp að berast þaðan þessa dagana.

Einnig er í plönunum Hornstrandaferð og er ætlunin að dvelja þar í 2-4 daga. Farið verður af stað fimmtudag eða föstudag og er planið að fara frá Norðurfirði með öðlingnum honum Reimari og til baka með Sigga Hjartar á Bjarnarnesinu, en þeir hafa ákveðið að styrkja verkefnið um fargjöldin og kunnum við þeim kærar þakkir fyrir, endilega kíkið á vefina þeirra þar sem má sjá undrin sem leynast þarna á þessu svæði. Þá á að ganga á bjargið og skoða nágrenni Hornvíkur og verður þetta eflaust draumaferð, enda er veðurspáin fín og ættu Vestfirðirnir að skarta sínu fegursta! Ekki laust við að það sé smá tilhlökkun í loftinu :D

I made it back to the US just fine, in fact better than just fine as I had a great weekend of celebrating 50 with some great people.  Thanks to everyone who sent their wishes. Now I am back in PA, where I have been puzzling over how to continue the blog and the project from this end. What I really want to be doing is going out in the field, talking to people, taking photographs, and then staying up till late at night with Gústi pulling it all together. But, that is not the reality of the situation, and the question becomes how to make best use of the weeks before I get back to Iceland....

Matt is 50 years old today. I have only know him for a year or so but it feels like forever. Now he is back home with his boys propably having a real good time :)

50 is a very good age I think, I have 13 years to that, wow only 13 years, Im feeling a bit old.

But Matt, you don´t look older than 21!
